Karma Meter (“we”, “us”, or “our”) operates the Karma Meter mobile application (the “App”) and the website at https://karmameterapp.com (collectively, the “Service”). We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your personal information responsibly. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, with whom we share it, and your choices regarding your data.
This Policy applies to all users of the Karma Meter App. The App provides sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) information and scores about consumer products based on scans and analysis. The App is not directed to children under 13 years of age, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected such information, we will delete it promptly.
The App does not provide health, medical, financial, or professional advice. All sustainability/ESG insights are informational only and generated with the assistance of artificial intelligence.

Information We Collect and Use
We collect only the information necessary to provide, maintain, and improve the Service.
- Account Data: When you create an account, we collect your email address and password. You may optionally provide a display name and profile photo.
- Product and Scan Data: When you scan or save products in the App, we store information associated with your account, such as product names, brands, barcodes, photos used for scanning, and the sustainability/ESG scores and summaries we display.
- Technical and Error Data: We use Sentry for crash reporting, error tracking, and (in a small percentage of sessions) session replays to diagnose and fix bugs. Sentry may receive technical details such as device type, operating system, app version, IP address (in some cases), and limited usage context when an error occurs. This applies only to the live/production version of the App, not internal testing builds.
- Camera and Photo Library Access: We request access to your device’s camera and photo library solely to enable barcode scanning and to allow you to upload product photos for sustainability analysis. We do not use camera or photo data for any other purpose.
We do not use the App for advertising or ad-related tracking. We do not sell user data to third parties.
2. How You Sign Up and Sign In
You create an account using email and password only. We do not currently offer social logins (e.g., Sign in with Apple or Google).
Optional profile details (display name, photo) can be added within the App. All authentication and account data are managed securely by our provider, Supabase.
3. Third-Party Providers and Data Sharing
We use the following third-party services to operate and improve the App. We share only the minimum data necessary with each:
- Supabase – Handles user accounts (email/password), profiles (name, photo), and all product/scan data (names, brands, barcodes, images, scores, summaries). Supabase provides our database and file storage. See Supabase’s privacy policy: https://supabase.com/privacy
- Expo Application Services (EAS) — Used for building the App and delivering over-the-air updates. EAS may receive information such as app version and device type to facilitate updates. See Expo’s privacy policy: https://expo.dev/privacy
- Sentry — Provides crash reporting, error tracking, and occasional session replays. Sentry receives technical data (e.g., device, OS, app version, IP in some cases) and limited error context. We do not send emails, passwords, or account identifiers to Sentry. See Sentry’s privacy policy: https://sentry.io/privacy/
- Grok (xAI) — Our sustainability scores and product insights are generated using Grok, xAI’s AI model. When you scan a product, we send only product-related content (e.g., product image and/or name/barcode) from our servers to Grok for analysis. We do not send account details (email, name, etc.) to xAI. xAI’s privacy practices apply to that processing. See xAI’s privacy policy: https://x.ai/legal/privacy-policy
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers or data brokers. If we introduce features like in-app purchases in the future, we may share minimal necessary data with a payment processor and will update this Policy accordingly.
We may disclose data if required by law, to protect our rights, or in connection with a merger/acquisition.
4. Data Storage and Retention
Your account, profile, and product/scan data are stored on Supabase’s infrastructure (database and file storage). The App also stores your login session on your device to keep you signed in.
We retain your data for as long as your account is active, or as necessary to provide the Service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, or enforce our agreements. We do not automatically delete inactive account data after a fixed period unless required by law.
5. Your Rights and Choices
You have the following options regarding your data:
- Sign out of your account at any time within the App.
- Delete individual saved products from your “Saved” list in the App.
Account deletion and data export are not currently available directly in the App. To request deletion of your account and associated data, or to request a copy of your data, please contact us at admin@karmameterapp.com. We will respond to verifiable requests within a reasonable timeframe (typically 30–45 days, or as required by applicable law).
You can also manage device permissions (e.g., revoke camera/photo access) through your device settings at any time.
6. Security
We implement reasonable technical, administrative, and physical safeguards to protect your information. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated Policy on our website and/or in the App, and by updating the “Effective Date” above. Your continued use of the Service after such changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
